NewYorkUpstate.com's survey raved about 27 eateries north of Westchester and Rockland counties. The report based its findings on Yelp.com's "best" formula, which ranks them using such factors as star rating and volume of customer reviews.
Two of the restaurants earning high scores for best burger taste, price and quality are in Dutchess County:
- Noshi's Coney Island at 803 Main St. in Poughkeepsie placed an impressive fourth on the Upstate rating, in part because its burgers were not only "absolutely delicious" but affordable. And it's open 24/7.
- The Matchbox Cafe off Route 9 in Rhinebeck was ranked 24th best burger joint in Upstate New York.
Matchbox promotes its "fine dining on a paper plate," serving up Hudson Valley "farm-to-table fresh food" including all-natural beef and vegan veggie burgers
One of Matchbox's 170 customer reviews reads: "The burgers were hearty and full of flavor. I appreciated that the tomato, lettuce, and onion were thick and generous slices of beautiful, delicious produce. The fries were clearly homemade and perfectly crispy."
If you don't mind driving a little further to check out more than 100 different burger and sandwich options, go to Joe Beez on Broadway in Kingston, which was ranked 13th overall. Another Ulster County eatery -- Shindig in the heart of Woodstock -- placed 10th for serving "a top notch burger."
